Presentation on Redefining Recycled Material Claims

By: Laura Thompson

March 2, 2021

How do you measure a drop in the ocean?

As chemical recycling technology continues to advance, the industry needs recycled material standards to keep up. Traditional percentage based claims will not serve the market in the near term while blended materials are at recycled content levels too low to be meaningful for brands and consumers. Claims based on mass balance allocations, supported by chain of custody standards, have been in use for over twenty years in commodities such as forest fiber, chocolate and soy. The Ellen Macarthur Foundation has recently recognized a need for similar standards to support chemical recycling. This recorded presentation will provide insights on best practices and consumer research conducted by the RMS team related to mass balance claims.
